Tsukuba City is located approx. 50 km from Tokyo, only 45 min. by Tsukuba Express line (TX railway), which is an excellent accessibility from the central area of Tokyo, Akihabara.
Tsukuba has the largest accumulation of research institutions in Japan.
Many national research centers and enterprises are located in Tsukuba. Our city is often called Tsukuba Science City. Tsukuba City is also named a Garden City where you can enjoy natural environments such as Mt. Tsukuba and the second largest lake in Japan called Lake Kasumigaura as well as many valuable historical and cultural assets nearby.
There are two universities located in Tsukuba: Tsukuba University, which is a national university and Tsukuba Gakuin University.
Approximately 12,500 foreigners including foreign students and researchers are living in Tsukuba. The population of the city is 256,222 as of April 1, 2024.
